During these times of uncertainty and worry, it is inspiring to hear stories of British Marine members using their resources and expertise to help the national effort to the crisis, and furthermore collaborating with each other.
British Marine member South Devon College has responded to a call by frontline health and care staff for personal protective equipment (PPE) required in the battle against Covid-19.
Working in partnership with Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, staff from South Devon College’s Hi Tech & Digital teaching department have been busy developing an open source 3D printing programme for protective visors. The team have now successfully started to manufacture the visors using South Devon College 3D printing equipment (which has been moved to employee homes in order to observe social distancing).
The aim is to provide a minimum of 100 visors by the middle of next week. This is in addition to the team continuing to engage with their students, providing online learning and package training solutions.
The open source 3D print file for the visor has been approved by the Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust. South Devon College is happy to share the file with businesses that have access to 3D printing technology and would be interested in producing the visor.
Another British Marine South West member, Darthaven Marina, supplied the shock cord for the elastic component of the visor headbands.
Many other British Marine members are making positive contributions to the crisis. Please share your good news stories and responses by emailing: [email protected].
