C&J Marine design and create covers and upholstery for the leisure marine industry. They had been wanting to recruit an apprentice for some time, so when they heard about the Kickstart Scheme through British Marine, they were keen to get involved.
As a consequence of the pandemic and the risk of long-term unemployment, the UK government launched the Kickstart Scheme as a means of getting 16 to 24-year-olds off Universal Credit and into employment. Employers of all sizes were eligible to apply for the funding, which covered the national minimum or living wage for an initial six-month period.
With support from British Marine’s Training Team, C&J Marine shared a job description for a Junior CAD Designer with the DWP (Department for work and pensions). The job was posted onto the Kickstart Scheme website and advertised through local Job Centres.
After receiving a number of strong applications, C&J Marine hired Helen. They were so impressed by her progress and enthusiasm that they decided to offer her a full-time permanent position after her initial six-month period ended.
Employers of all sizes can apply for funding until midday on 17 December 2021 to create jobs for 16 to 24 year olds on Universal Credit.
