Falmouth Boat Co. moor, store, repair, renovate, refurbish and refinish boats to the highest standards.

Their team of 40 includes 21 full-time specialists highly qualified, experienced and skilled all aspects of boat repair from engineering to rigging, to composite fabrication to traditional shipwrighting. They work with both manufacturers of modern-day vessels to individuals who have a vision for the care maintenance and renovation of their craft and take pride in ensuring that each boat receives first-class repair, restoration, refurbishment or servicing, from haul out to relaunch.

The Challenge

As the country went into lockdown during the coronavirus pandemic, Jonathan Fielding, the proud owner of Falmouth Boat Co Ltd., was forced to close his business and put all but one staff member on furlough. Like many businesses, Jonathan sought to mitigate his losses by applying for relief on his business rates. He was surprised to hear that he did not qualify for the scheme since his business was not deemed to be within the leisure sector!

How we helped Jonathan stay open for business

The Falmouth Boat Co specialises in the repair and restoration of boats. The company employs over 40 members of staff and up until the coronavirus pandemic struck, was working at full capacity. Jonathan needed to act quickly in order to mitigate the impact of forced closure, so he asked British Marine for representational support.

Lobbying on his behalf, British Marine helped ensure that the Falmouth Boat Co qualified as a leisure marine business and ultimately saved £23,000 in business rates. Furthermore, Jonathan was then able to apply for a business grant, which helped him to open his business again, without any detrimental consequences such as scaling back on capacity or making redundancies.
