by Adam James

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) have published a new collection of cases (volume 1 of 2025) detailing accidents involving vessels from the merchant, fishing, and recreational sectors.

This safety digest draws the attention of the marine community to some of the lessons arising from investigations into recent accidents and incidents. There are introductions by experts in the Merchant, Fishing and recreational sections and a fascinating chief inspectors introduction on keeping a good lookout and rule 17.

Located in offices in Southampton, the MAIB is an independent branch within the department for Transport (DfT). The head of the MAIB, the Chief Inspector of Marine Accidents, reports directly to the Secretary of State for Transport.
