With the push for marine decarbonisation solutions there are a number of funding opportunities for companies looking in this area. If you have a new idea, or a project, check to see if there is funding to support your work. 

 

Launchpad: marine and maritime in the Great South West – R2 MFA. 

UK-registered businesses can apply for a share of up to £3 million for projects that grow their innovation activities in the marine and maritime cluster in the Great South West. This funding is from Innovate UK.

Royal Academy of Engineering – Green Future Fellowships 

The Green Future Fellowship programme aims to nurture climate innovation by providing those working across academia and industry with the space, time and support they need to accelerate their critical technologies into scalable, commercially viable, and world-changing projects. Green Future Fellows will receive up to £3 million and support over 10 years to develop their ground-breaking initiatives.

UK National Clean Maritime Research Hub's Wave 2 Flexible Funding Call 

Applications are invited for the UK National Clean Maritime Research Hub's Wave 2 Flexible Funding Call. Funding for approximately seven projects is available under Wave 2.

The full economic cost (fEC) of each successful project (excluding any project partner contributions) can be up to £50,000, of which the UK-MaRes Hub will fund 80% fEC (as is standard for EPSRC funded calls). In addition to the funding requested from the Hub, as a requirement for this call, we also require equivalent match funding to be leveraged from your project partners on a 1:1 basis.

Proposals are invited to address five priority research areas:

1. Real-time vessel data communication
2. Risk and uncertainty regarding marine regulations and policy implications
3. Novel energy-saving devices to improve vessel efficiency
4. Novel cost-effective nuclear propulsion systems
5. Autonomy for vessel efficiency

ODA Global Innovation Fellowships: C40 

The objective of the Official Development Assistance (ODA) Global Innovation Fellowships is to provide opportunities to UK-based early- and mid-career researchers from across the humanities and social sciences to develop their skills, networks and careers in the creative and cultural, public, private and policy sectors to address challenges that require innovative approaches and solutions.

Applications are invited in any of the following areas:

Travel support for UK businesses to attend European events 

Innovate UK is offering travel support for companies to attend consortia-building events in Europe. The travel awards are an excellent mechanism for supporting companies who want to expand their networks across Europe and make an impact in collaborative international research and development projects. These awards encourage UK participation, engagement and visibility at international events and aim to accelerate UK involvement in European research programmes (incl. Horizon Europe and EUREKA.)

Up to £700 is available to help cover travel and subsistence costs needed to attend the following events:

  1. Ocean Energy Europe 2024, 5-6 November, Aviemore, Scotland (application deadline: 9 October 2024, notification date: 11 October 2024)

  2. Smart City Expo World Congress, 5-7 November 2024, Barcelona, Spain (application deadline: 23 September 2024, notification date: 26 September 2024)

  3. EU Hydrogen Week, 18-22 November 2024, Brussels, Belgium (application deadline: 14 October 2024, notification date: 17 October 2024)

Innovate UK Smart Grants: July 2024

The Innovate UK Smart Grant supports micro, small or medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and their partners to develop the best game changing and world leading innovative R&D projects. It offers funding where other opportunities are not available or appropriate, and where timing is key to ensure swift and successful commercialisation post project completion.

European Space Agency: Maritime Decarbonisation – Jun 2024 to Feb 2025

This call for proposals, issued under the ARTES BASS programme line, is aimed at supporting the development of sustainable space-based services and applications that address challenges related to the decarbonisation of the maritime industry. Additionally, the call seeks to assist the maritime sector in adapting to and complying with new European and international regulatory frameworks.

Maritime decarbonisation is a broad subject that requires the involvement and advancements from various stakeholders. To mirror the multifaceted nature of the required transformations and address the specific needs of different decarbonisation approaches, the call has been organised into four sub-themes, each open at a different point in time. Please see the list of currently open or upcoming funding calls and their further specific details below:

  1. Sub-theme 1: Decarbonisation through Digitalisation and Logistics Optimisation (opening: June 2024)

  2. Sub-theme 2: Decarbonisation through Maritime Autonomy (opening: September 2024)

SMI Marine Autonomy Challenge (MAChallenge)

This exciting biennial challenge is open to teams of students studying at UK universities. Each qualifying team is provided with an industry simulator to enable them to build the autonomous behaviours required to achieve a series of challenges. These will be carried out using a 2m catamaran that has been specially designed, built and equipped for MAChallenge – a cash prize of £2000 awaits the winning team. The aim is to bring on the next generation of marine technologists and to encourage development and take-up of marine autonomous systems technologies in the UK.
