The MCA has issued a new guidance document aiming at raising awareness about the risks and shortfalls of signing on to a vessel that is from a flag state that has not ratified the maritime labour convention.
The guidance supports seafarers in making informed decisions, the latest version has been amended to include all seafarers including both merchant ships and yachts with specific amendments regarding actions after abandonment, armed robbery or piracy.
Subjects covered by the document range from working hours and conditions to repatriation after an injury or accident.
It is vital that all potential crew and seafarers understand that the MLC covers standards of basic health and safety, and accident prevention.
