Building on the success of the first British Marine National Environmental Road Map in 2020, British Marine has released an updated version of its industry-leading strategic document.
The original roadmap released in 2020 was developed to provide British Marine members with a foundation upon which to begin tackling the many environmental challenges that the marine industry was facing. In 2020 the roadmap directly reflected the concerns of the marine industry, incorporating those concerns with the government agenda, aims and objectives. The roadmap formed the priorities of British Marine at the time, supporting the development of industry solutions in the six key areas that were highlighted by the survey of members from both the inland and coastal sectors.
Now, four years later, and as a component part of a greater British Marine environmental strategy and the release of the Decarbonisation Hub, British Marine has updated the roadmap to reflect the changes that have occurred in the intervening years.
The Environment Act in 2021 fired the starting gun on a whole raft of new rules and regulations, specifically targeted at achieving a generational improvement in our natural environment. New rules and regulations affecting industry are now coming thick and fast, and the industry will need increasing focus and resources to make sure they are suitable, reasonable in their implementation, and followed. In addition, the industry must also be aware of what is on the horizon: the biggest fundamental change to business for generations - the transition from carbon-based energy.
From extended producer responsibility in packaging and plastics to the upcoming UK CBAM affecting imports of Steel, aluminium and glass, the business landscape is becoming more complex, more convoluted, and more expensive to comply with. The Environmental Roadmap will help British Marine Members identify existing legal obligations and plan for those changes on the horizon.
