British Marine Scotland (BMS) was the proud sponsor of the Clipper Connect event held in Oban last week (Friday 19 July). The event was a key part of the tremendous events programme created to allow residents and visitors to enjoy the Clipper Race Stopover in Oban, the first time this prestigious global sporting event has come to Scotland since it started in 1996.
Part of the Clipper Connect Business Series, the event focused on Sustainable Marine Tourism, with a panel discussion led by David Adams McGilp from Visit Scotland.
Comprising British Marine Scotland Board Members, Annabel Lawrence, lecturer at the University of the Highlands & Islands, Euan Carruthers from You and Sea, Susan Blunt, founder of Adventurous Ewe and Clipper Race Crew and Clipper Race Skipper Max River, the panel answered questions relating to a range of topics relevant to sustainability and economic, social and environmental responsibility.
The panel provided a diverse range of perspectives on the challenges and opportunities within marine tourism, covering topics from decarbonisation and future propulsion technologies in the marine leisure sector to career development, marine wildlife conservation, and the roles of government, businesses, and communities.
Sarah Kennedy, Chair of British Marine Scotland commented: “The panel responses were highly informative and thought provoking, with a real focus on local businesses and communities and the benefits of working together to grow local economies in a sustainable way, with care of the environment as a central element.
“British Marine Scotland is committed to sustainable marine tourism and we look forward to working with our industry partners and stakeholders in the upcoming review and update of Giant Strides, Scotland’s Marine Tourism Strategy.”
Following the panel discussion was an invaluable opportunity for networking, which was introduced by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston.
British Marine Scotland was also delighted to be joined by the new President of British Marine, Robert Parton, and British Marine’s public affairs advisor, Joanna Richardson, who has recently assisted BMS in securing changes to the new Visitor Levy Legislation.
British Marine Scotland would like to extend its thanks to the presenters, panellists and chair of the event as well as hosts, the environmental and education charity, the Scottish Association for Marine Science and the Clipper Race Team.
