It is with deep sadness that we share news of the passing of John Dodd, or "Doddie" as he was affectionately known as at British Marine. John was a respected figure in marine insurance and a passionate supporter of boat owners and the wider marine industry. His contributions to British Marine and its members have left a lasting legacy.
John’s career in the marine sector began in the mid-1970s when Carrington International Insurance Brokers Ltd., the company he co-founded, decided to specialise in both pleasure craft and commercial marine insurance. Under his leadership, Carrington’s flourished, expanding through key acquisitions and becoming a leading marine insurance provider. Even after the sale of Carrington’s, John’s entrepreneurial spirit saw him establish Denovo Underwriting Agencies Ltd. in 2002, which he successfully managed until his retirement in 2022 at the age of 78.
John was a great supporter of British Marine. He served as Chair of the British Marine South Association, Vice President of British Marine, and actively participated in various committees, including the International Federation of Leisure and Sports Association (IFLSA), which he helped found. Beyond his professional roles, John’s passion for the community extended to involvement with events like the British Marine Federation (BMF) Golf Society, where the Denovo Rose Bowl is still contested, and the BMF Race Days at Goodwood, where Denovo sponsored races for many years.
Sadly, John was diagnosed with lung cancer at the beginning of 2024. He faced his diagnosis with remarkable strength, undergoing treatment earlier this year. Although he overcame cancer, other health challenges persisted, and he passed away on 12 September 2024.
John will be remembered not only for his professional achievements but also for his warmth, generosity, and love of life. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, including his wife, Julie and his children, Charlotte, Jeff, Matthew and Nick and all who knew him. British Marine honours his memory and the indelible mark he made on our industry.
