The COVID-19 Statutory Sick Pay Scheme will officially launch on Tuesday 26 May.
This scheme, which was announced by the Chancellor earlier this year is open to small and medium sized businesses with fewer than 250 employees.
Employers will be able to apply to HMRC to recover the costs of COVID-19 related sick pay.
This means that employers will receive the repayments at the relevant rate of SSP that they have paid to current or former employees for eligible periods of sickness which started on or after 13 March 2020.
The repayment will cover up to two weeks of SSP for each employee that was off work because they:
- Have COVID-19;
- Are self-isolating and are unable to work from home; or
- They are shielding because they’ve been advised that they are at high risk of severe illness from COVID-19.
