MCA issues update on COVID-19 impact and safety measures for Vessel Traffic Services

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has published a Marine Information Note (MIN) detailing the impact of COVID-19 on Vessel Traffic Services (VTS).

Due to unprecedented measures being advised by the UK Government, such as the implementation of ‘social distancing’, VTS authorities may not be able to fully discharge declared functions.

The MIN, which can be found here, endeavours to provide clarity and guidance in the current circumstances. It details where a VTS authority may need to reduce or otherwise downgrade one or more of its services, whilst ensuring a continuing level of safety for maritime users, shipping services and members of the public, as well as the protection of the marine environment,

It is advised that the MIN should be read in conjunction with MGN 401 Amendment 2.
